WARREN HIGH SCHOOL - January 25, 2003

By Sue Kim

Warren High School was where everyone was on Saturday night as the Knights went head to head with the Warren High School Bears faculty. Tonight’s game was definitely one to be in attendance for (as is every game), as the Bears gave the Knights a run for their money. With Knights and faculty introductions made and out of the way, Melissa Schuman, formerly of the group Dream, took center court to sing the National Anthem.

With the clock set at 12 minutes, Sammy got ready for the tip off with Thad, Cylk, Romeo, and Arlen on the court with him, eager to gain possession of the ball. But it was the faculty with the ball first in tonight’s game. Bears faculty member Anthony Caraveo was the first to score tonight with a two point shot. It was long before Cylk shot a three point basket to put the Knights up on the board. In the middle of the first quarter Dion made his way into the gym, taking a little break from playing ball and watching the Knights play. The Miz, Lil J, Dejai, Bryan, and Josh were rotated in. Dejai was certainly on top of things tonight as he made a three point shot soon after he entered the game. Later, Dejai made an empty pass but Josh was nearby to retrieve the ball for the Knights. Towards the end of the quarter, Coach Andre Smith made his arrival just in time to hopefully help the Knights take the lead in tonight’s game. We’d have to see if that proved to be true in the second quarter as the Bears were leading at the end of the first with a score of 23-15.

Romeo, Sammy, Thad, Jesse, and Cylk were in at the beginning of the second. Romeo certainly started this quarter off right with a three point shot for the Knights as soon as the clock started to count down. Cylk passed the ball in hopes that it would get to Jesse but it was unfortunately intercepted by a Bears faculty member. There was a battle at the faculty basket as the Bears tried to get the stubborn ball to get them a two point shot while the Knights tried to do just the opposite. Bear faculty member Carnel Anderson threw the ball down court in hopes that one of his teammates would find it but instead the ball was in the hands of the Knights very own Romeo. At the end of the second quarter, the Knights were still down with the score at 49-35.

Warren High School cheerleaders were added to tonight’s line-up of performers as they kicked off halftime with a performance of stunts, dance, and cheer. ‘At Last’ followed in tonight’s show with their acapella version of “Killing Me Softly” and with their new single “I Miss You.” Before all madness hit at the autograph tables, Lil’ J certainly got the crowd going with high energy performance.

The third quarter was underway as faculty member Ian Calvert took the ball down court to try to make a shot for the Bears, but Thad fouled him. In the midst of all the chaos of the basketball game, DJ Speed and Joey Nicks of Power 106 added to it by making their rounds in the stands and passing out free gear to all the fans and spectators. Romeo even worked overtime tonight as he helped out his fellow Power 106 crew. Josh took a fall this quarter as he ricocheted off Coach Scott Lane. Romeo took advantage of the situation and grabbed a towel and mopped off Josh’s sweat and gave it away to a lucky cheerleader. The Knights still weren’t in control of the score board with just one fourth of the game left. The score: 67-44.

Going into the fourth quarter, a time out was called early in the quarter as both teams regrouped before going back out on the court. Volleyball coach Scott Lane put the Bears in even more of a lead as he scored with a two point shot. Kevin Hobbs gained the possession of the ball after he stole it from Cylk. The Miz put the score at 73-55 as he scored a two point shot for the Knights. Joey Nicks and DJ Speed held the “Un-American, No Talent Search” at the Power 106 table. The objective of tonight’s talent search: you must have no talent at all. Some of the performances were not music to anyone’s ears but the contestants were rewarded nonetheless. Cylk was given the opportunity to make a technical shot towards the end of the game and was successful with both shots. Although his efforts helped the Knights score, it didn’t help to win the game. The score at the end of tonight’s game was 78-57. The Bears are only the second team to beat the Knights this season so much props going out to them. Hopefully tonight’s outcome won’t be repeated at next Saturday’s game at Ocean View High School. Come join us to find out!
