SCHURR HIGH SCHOOL - April 30, 2003

By Jeanne Flores

The Knights arrived in Montebello on Wednesday, April 30, 2003 to face off against the Schurr High School Spartan Faculty. The Knights and the Spartans shot around at their respected ends of the court while the fans filed into the gym.

Mike Mayoral, head football coach and physical education teacher, observed the Knights while they warmed up and said, “I think we’re going to wallop them a little bit. I think we’re going to do some damage today. They kind of cheated last year, but they brought the A Team out this year, and we’re going to get at them this year.” Would Mayoral’s predictions for the game come true?

Romeo and Kiko attempted to make several free throws on their knees, while Josh H. and Arlen were playing a little game of one on one. Finally it was time to introduce the teams. While the Spartan faculty was being introduced, Romeo and Kiko attempted to break-dance near the HK bench by doing moves such as ‘the worm’. Next, Michael Mirisch did the honors with introducing the HK team. Eric Winter, The Goodfellas, Josh Henderson (who backflipped and cartwheeled his way to the team), Kiko Ellsworth (who tried to cartwheel), Dion Basco, Cylk Cozart, Arlen Escarpeta, Trevor Penick, and Teck Money guests Jeff Licon, Josh Keaton, Mischa Mandel, and performers At Last made up the HK team.

After the national anthem by At Last, tip off came, and the game was on its way with Josh H., The Goodfellas, Cylk, and Kiko making up the starting line up. Driver Dave went around the stands looking for the noisiest people to give cd’s to.

Half time came with two songs from At Last. At Last surprised fans by switching up their signature a capella performance of “Killing Me Softly” by incorporating Shai’s “If I Ever Fall In Love” into their song.

“You know what, we just like to change things up every once in a while. We get bored singing the same things over and over again, but we know that people love ‘Killing Me Softly.’ So we thought we would throw it in to do a little something different. We will still do ‘Killing Me Softly’ and do it as a whole, but we thought it would be fun to try it out here,” revealed Ken Dela Cruz, At Last.

One fan was especially impressed by At Last’s performance. “It was real cute!” began Christina Sanchez, freshman, “I love all the guys’ moves and how each individual dances. Guys who can dance are an A+ on my List! Their voices are beautiful!”

After the autograph session, Jeff and his friends assisted Driver Dave with giving away shirts to the fans. The crowd screamed when they saw The Goodfellas and Josh Henderson dance with a fan on the sidelines just before the third quarter was on its way. If you were knew your Power 106 trivia, Driver Dave awarded you with cd’s. While the game wounded down in it’s final quarter, Cylk was stretching against the bleachers which gave Kiko an opportunity to mock what Cylk was doing. Minutes later, Kiko happily jumped around, hugging referee Stoney Jackson when Trevor made a three pointer. The Knights continued to rack up the points, which gave Josh time to walk up and down the sidelines acting like a chair was stuck on his butt. Playtime was over for Josh and he was called back into the game. Game time turned into dance time when he worked it to Missy Elliot’s “Work It” while a Spartan was at the free throw line. The dancing continued with “2 Of America’s Most Wanted” blazing in the background, Romeo and another fan dancing on the sidelines. Finally, the game was over in the Knight’s favor 91-63.

Michelle Gavara, Senior, said this about the game, “The game was great. It was really exciting, and I went last year and it was definitely more exciting than last year’s game. Even though it was a slaughter, it was very exciting and entertaining.”

One on One

How does it feel to be recognized knowing you just started on a reality based TV show? - Hope Galindo, Senior
Josh Henderson:
It’s kind of cool because a lot of people recognize me and feel like they know me because they saw the real me on the show. They kind of saw me go from a dude off the street trying to go to college into a person in a music group getting a record deal. It’s kind of personal.

What motivates you to come to the HK games? Are you involved in any other organizations? - Silky Saini, Junior
Josh:
Just because I like to play basketball, and I like to see the fans. No, at the time I am not involved with anything else.

I am also an inspiring singer and I wanted to ask who inspires you in singing? Just to let you know – you inspire me. You’re amazing! - Jaen Flores, Junior
Josh:
Just, I don’t know...I’m inspired by a lot of people. Just the people in the business and that do it for the simple fact that they love to perform and that they love to do music, and they love to be on stage and perform for people. The whole business inspires me. If I could pick one person...man...I don’t know who I’d pick. Back in the day, it would’ve been Michael Jackson, but you know music as a whole has different inspirations to me to do music.

In which ways has your celebrity status changed the way you view your life? What other contributions do you do for your community? - Jenny Marie
Trevor Penick:
Just what I do for a living changed my lifestyle. When I’m at home I just do what I did before. I hang out with my boys, do whatever, chill, but when I’m out on the road every time is a completely turnaround from what I was doing before. Just the lifestyle in general is a change because I’m always busy, and doing that. As far as the community goes, I play in as many charity events as I’m available for. I have my manager call me all the time. I’ve played in the U.S. Open last year and raised money for my fraternity charity, which is Push America, I played in the Bob Hope Classic, and I’ll be playing in the Steve Harvey tournament next Monday. Just anytime I can participate in a celebrity game.

When is O-town coming to L.A.? - Monica Sigala, Freshman
Trevor:
Sometime in June or July. You got to keep checking.

What is it like participating in your first game of the season?
Teck Money:
It’s good to be back in the action. I had a hernia operation, so I was out of action, plus I’ve been out of town a lot lately. Doing this game is fun.

What have you been doing lately, because we’ve seen you on TV several times such as the cameo on Friends?
Teck:
Yea, I did a cameo on Friends, I did a Bud light commercial for the Superbowl...right now I’m working on this new project ‘The Fireman Project’ and I’m working with some music and I’ve been DJing a lot, just hosting some parties around the United States.

How come you didn’t do the Real World/ Road Rules challenge? - Anonymous
Teck:
Because I was doing a movie at the time. I didn’t want to break a leg. I don’t really want to do that again, but if the fans want me to, I might do it again.

Are they going to do a sequel to ‘White Man Can’t Jump?’ - Anonymous
Cylk Cozart:
20th Century Fox is talking about ‘White Man Can’t Jump 2’ and it’ll probably be within the next year if it’s going to happen. It’ll start going through the trades.

How did you get into DJing? How Old Are You? - Christina Sanchez, Freshman
Dejai:
I’m about 27 years old. We got the job by hanging out at Power 106. One of Big Boy’s homeboys saw us and introduced us to the job. Me and Romeo originally came out here to sing. So now we’re out here doing the music thing, being the on air personalities.
Romeo: I got into DJing when they said to do it part time. I never did radio so we had the chemistry. So we decided to do it and it worked out. We’ve been there for 6 years now and I’m 25.

How did you get involved in acting on ‘The Brothers Garcia’ and how old are you? - Katherine Juarez, Freshman
Jeff Licon:
I’m 17 right now, and all of my older sisters used to do it when they were younger. I saw one of their commercials when I was about 5 that they were in. I asked my mom if I could do it too. We went to an open audition for a manager and I got started when I was about 5.

Wednesday night was the first of two back-to-back games this week as the Knights traveled to Schurr High School in Montebello to play against the Schurr H.S. Spartan faculty. Fans and students alike came out tonight to support the senior class. ‘At Last’ was on the roster as tonight’s musical entertainment, singing the National Anthem that brought on cheers and hollers from the gym.

Within minutes on the clock, the first quarter was soon underway. For the Knights, Josh, Dejai, Kiko, Romeo, and Cylk got ready to go against the Spartan faculty. Kiko was at center court for the jump ball, which eventually ended up in Spartan possession. Although the Spartans had the ball first in this quarter, it was Romeo from Tha Goodfellas who made the first shot of the game with a three point shot. But it wasn’t long before the Spartans came back with a three point shot of their own. Both Kiko and Cylk had trouble making their three point shots in the middle of the first period but Cylk did make up for it by effectively blocking a faculty shot later. Dion, Eric, Arlen, and Trevor were rotated in during the middle of the first with Arlen wasting no time in scoring points for the Knights. After an empty pass on the faculty side, Arlen and Cylk passed the ball down court to the Knights side to make a two point shot. The first quarter ended with the Knights up with a score of 6-13.

With Arlen, Dion, Trevor, and Eric in from the end of the first quarter, Romeo was added into the mix in the beginning of the second. A Hollywood Knights fan got the chance to throw the ball into play with a pass to Romeo. Romeo with the ball, he dribbled past a couple of Spartans to score a two point shot. Trevor missed a two point shot as he fell to the floor with a Spartan faculty member, which resulted in sending Trevor to the free throw line; out of two of his shots, he made one putting the Knights at 21, Spartans 8. Later, Eric was also fouled with going in for a two, making both of his free throws. Josh’s attempt for a two point shot was a tease as the ball spun around the rim before not making it in the basket. With an assist from Teck, Kiko made a two pointer not long after Josh’s attempt. The Knights were still up by 10 by the end of the second: 27-37.

Although the Knights were in the lead, there was still a lot could happen in the second half of the game. After half time, the game resumed with both teams on court ready to go. Cylk tried for a three point shot early in the quarter but was fouled in which he added two points to the Knights score with his free throws. Trevor took the ball down court and passed to Romeo who tried for a two point shot. He missed with the ball almost going out of bounds if it wasn’t a save from Josh. Arlen lost possession of the ball to a Spartan, who took the ball down court to make another two points for the home team. In the midst of trying to find a fellow teammate to pass the ball to, Eric stepped out of the court, giving the ball to the faculty. There was a period of consecutive shots being made from both teams, Trevor and Arlen contributing for the Knights. A second before the buzzer rang to end the third, there was a technical foul on behalf of the Spartans in which a Spartan faculty member made an additional point for his team. But the Knights were up by a significant number of points before heading into the fourth and last quarter with the score of 43-61.

Faculty had possession of the ball first this quarter and used it to their advantage by scoring a three point shot right into the quarter. Trevor came right back with the points for the Knights as he also scored a three. Spartan faculty member missed a two point shot and it was Eric with the rebound. With a pass to Dion, the Knights had another two points to their name. In between free throws being made by a Spartan, Cylk, Josh, Kiko, and Romeo were rotated into the game. Kiko, Cylk, and Romeo are just a few of the Knights that helped the Knights advance even more against the Spartans as the ending score came to 63-91, the Knights.
