SAN MARINO HIGH SCHOOL - March 8, 2003

By Sue Kim

After the mass hysteria at Burbank High School a few nights before, it was time for the Knights to play a back-to-back game as they traveled to San Marino High School on Saturday. Tonight, the Knights take on the Titans facultly with proceeds helping to benefit San Marino High School’s freshman class. With HK regulars ‘At Last’ singing tonight’s National Anthem, it was time to play ball and hopefully make the Knights’ two game wins into three. In the first quarter both teams played well enough to make their fans proud. Arlen was the last to try and make a shot in this quarter but his attempt failed while stumbling on the gym floor as the buzzer rang to end this quarter. In this period the Titans were more on the ball than the Knights as they held the lead with a score of 21-14.

In the second quarter, the Titan faculty started out strong as they made the first two points in this quarter. Dejai tried to make a shot for the Knights but Titan faculty number 32 blocked his shot. Being a true team captain, Cylk was on the court making a name for himself (as he always does). In this period he intercepted a faculty pass while getting the rebound from Titans number 39’s shot. Titan number 24 went in for a two point shot where the ball seemed temperamental as it made a lap around the rim but with a little tip from Titan number 1, it went in for a two point shot. For the Knights, Sammy, Cylk, Kiko, and Dejai helped as far as the points went but by the end of this quarter, the Knights were still down, 31-33.

The Nade, At Last, and Jillian put on a wonderful halftime show (as usual) before the ever so crazy autograph session that eventually led to the second half of the game. Dion, Kiko, Arlen, Brady Harrell, and Cylk were in for the first part of the third quarter. The Knights tied up the score early in the quarter with a two point shot to make it 33-33. Dion struggled with Titans 20 and 23 on the floor as he tried to gain possession of the ball. While going for a lay-up, Josh was fouled which sent him to the free throw line. There he made both of his free throw shots putting the score at 40-40. After Josh’s free throws, he helped the Knights score by making a few more shots as so did Sammy and Romeo to put the Knights in the lead for at the end of the third quarter with a score of 46-50.

The Knights had the last 10-minute quarter to maintain their lead but a lot can happen in 10 minutes of a basketball game so the Knights weren’t so quick to celebrate. The faculty had possession of the ball at the beginning of the quarter. The score during this period was consistent with no team drastically leading the other. So it was down to the last few seconds of the game that really counted. With about 30 seconds left in the game, the score was 68-65, Titans. With just eight seconds remaining in the game, Kiko was fouled which gave him and the Knights a chance to catch up to the Titans. He did just that by making both his free throws, which put the Knights just one point behind the Titans. Titan number 39 was fouled soon after, which gave him two chances to gain points for his team. He made one of his two free throws making a 2-point gap in the score just as the seconds were winding down. Just as the buzzer rang, Cylk went to make a three point shot to try and win it for the Knights but tonight just wasn’t the night. The Titans were the ones to celebrate their win with a score of 69-67. It’s back on the court this Saturday as the Knights travel to Alta Loma High School in Rancho Cucamonga to play yet another exciting game.

Saturday, March 8, 2003, San Marino High School welcomed Josh Henderson, Arlen Escarpeta, Kiko Ellsworth, the Goodfellas, Dante Clark, Sammy Lopez, Anthony Harrell, Grady Harrell, Dion Basco, Cylk Cozart, Ron Lester, Mischa Mandel, Jeff Licon, Jillian, At Last, Deanna Wright, and Josh Keaton in the city of San Marino.

Tiffany Huang, freshman, was the coordinator who brought the Knights to San Marino High School. “It’s basically because of Jared Padalecki, he was one of my favorite celebrities, and we started going to the Hollywood Knights games. Then we found that the games were really good, so we invited them to our school.”

Thus, after the guys of ‘At Last’ wowed the crowd with their five-part harmony for the National Anthem, the Knights bounced and danced around to Clipse’s “When the Last Time” to get themselves hyped up for the game.

Ron Lester spent most of his time entertaining and interacting with the crowd by continuously encouraging them to stand up and make some noise. On the other side of the gym, Driver Dave, gave away free shirts to the fans. The crowd cheered on their Titan faculty as Kazuko Uyeda, girls’ varsity basketball coach, tried to lose Josh with her quick dribbling. She was able to make a lay-up and got fouled. In fact, both female Titan players impressed the crowd, Josh, and Dion (who had to guard the girls) with their basketball skills.

“It was a piece of cake!” joked Josh, “No actually, they were very good. So it was a challenge.”

“They’re good,” added Dion, “They took the ball strong to the hole and they got the points on the board.”

More shirts were thrown into the crowd, and Ron picked several fans to do some outrageous stuff for a shirt. One fan ran up and down the sidelines with his pants at his ankles, while another ran around the court several times acting like a chicken.

The Nade kicked off the half time performances with a song off their album and a little dance presentation to 50 Cent’s “In Da Club,” which ended with Anthony attempting to slam-dunk a ball. Next was Jillian, accompanied by her dancers. Jillian sang two songs, including one entitled “722.” Finally, ‘At Last’ hit the court with their a cappella version of “Killing Me Softly” and another song off their album Driven.

Mike Lee explained how he learned how to beat box. “I basically started hearing rappers doing it and stuff outside of school. Then one day I just kind of tried it, and it just came naturally.”

Amy Ubovich, freshman, was one of many fans who enjoyed the performances. “I thought they were very organized, and they sang well. I really liked ‘At Last’.”

More free stuff was given away during the second half of the game. Wilson Zheng, freshman, successfully got Ron T’s attention, after screaming his head off several times in order to win a pair of active shoes, a Power 106 shirt, and socks. If fans couldn’t get anymore excited, Josh pulled a cheerleader from the stands and allowed her to inbound the ball for him and shoot the ball – unfortunately she missed.

Between the third and fourth quarter, Romeo won Michelle Alvarado, senior, two tickets to the after party by making a basket from half court in one shot.

While Grady was calling out raffle ticket numbers, Ron T had one guy and one girl arm wrestle for another pair of action shoes. As expected, the guy won, but he had to arm wrestle Bert Baker, HK security, in order to win the shoes. Students watched on as the fan struggled to bring down Bert’s arm, but he lost, allowing the girl to win the shoes, and the guy received a shirt as a consolation prize. The game finally ended with a missed buzzer shot by Cylk, allowing the Titan faculty to win 69-67.

Tiffany Huang, was very pleased with tonight’s turnout. “It was good. It was more than I expected, and we thank the Knights a lot for that. Power 106 came on Thursday and help promoted the game.”

One on One

What qualifies a person to receive his or her own personalized jersey?
Michael Mirisch:
They must be currently starring or co-starring on a television series, major motion picture, or in a group that has a current album in rotation.

At Last has been getting a lot of publicity as of late. You’ve gotten to perform and KIIS FM’s Jingle Ball and were on the Wayne Brady Show. How has this changed you guys?
Mike Lee (At Last):
If anything, it’s made us hungrier, and we want to work harder. We’ve gotten a little bit of a taste on what we could accomplish, all the exposure just makes us want more.

What was going on in your head when you missed those several free throws? (Josh missed 3 out of 4 free throws from a technical foul)
Josh Henderson:
I was very surprised. Not to brag, but I don’t miss free throws that often.
