PASADENA HIGH SCHOOL - April 26, 2003

By Sue Kim

For the first time, the Knights traveled to Pasadena High School to play another game of the ‘02-‘03 season. On Saturday night the Knights went up against the Pasadena High School Bulldogs faculty with only six games left in this season. The Hollywood Knights always features the newest and hottest celebrities and tonight was no exception as Jamie Elman, who plays Luke on “American Dreams,” joined the Knights for the first time. The new up and coming group Evolution was on hand tonight to start things off by singing the National Anthem.

The start of the game, Michael, Wesley, Robert, Cylk, and Thad were first in. Michael got ready to get go against Bulldog faculty member for the tip off. Faculty gained possession of the ball first and attempted to make the first shot but missed and it was Cylk for the rebound. With the ball, Cylk dribbled down court to the Knights basket but was tripped by a faculty member who was trying to block him. The ball still ended up in Knights possession as Robert passed the ball to Thad and from there to Michael and back again to Cylk for a the first shot of the game- three points. Thad got a rebound on the faculty side but soon stolen from the faculty. After the faculty attempted to make a shot, Cylk got the ball back for the Knights with the rebound. Kiko, Arlen, Josh, Keith, and Jesse were rotated in the middle of this quarter. Arlen charged down court with the ball to make a two point shot for the Knights. After a Bulldog faculty member gains the ball back from Arlen, he proceeded to make a two point shot which left the score 17-20 at the end of the first in favor of the Knights.

Pasadena High School varsity cheerleaders gave a chance for both teams to regroup before the start of the second quarter with a performance. Following the performance, Arlen, Josh, Kiko, Andrew, and Keith were on the court for the start of the second. The Knights started off the quarter with the ball but soon lost it after a foul was called on behalf of the faculty. Keith made a 3-point shot in the midst of the foul call but unfortunately it didn’t count. Josh passed the ball down court to Andrew who attempted to make a shot but missed. But Kiko made up for it soon after by making a 2 point shot soon after for the Knights. There was a traveling violation called on the faculty right before Cylk, Thad, Robert, Michael, and Wesley were rotated in. The faculty had control of the ball and the scoreboard at the end of the second quarter, 42-34.

After a performance from the Nade and Evolution at halftime, it was time for the fans to get up close and person with their fans at the autograph session. The third quarter soon followed and it was time for the Knights to try and gain control of tonight’s game. Arlen, Keith, Wesley and Keith are to thank for a majority of this quarter’s points. Towards the beginning of the quarter Thad was called for traveling. Robert later threw an empty pass but Wesley was near by to save the ball from going out of bounds. As Arlen dribbled down court, he was knocked down by two faculty members, which resulted in a foul being called. At the end of the quarter, the Knights were still down by a few points, 62-56, but they still had the fourth quarter to regain themselves.

Keith, Arlen, Kiko, Andrew, and Josh were in first in the fourth quarter with the ball in possession. Kiko was the first to help the Knights score this quarter but his attempt did not go as well as planned as he missed and the ball was rebounded by the faculty. Kiko was fouled later in the quarter where he made one of his two free throws. Cylk and Kiko both tried to win this game for the Knights with their shooting but at the buzzer the score was 81-72, Bulldog faculty.

Pasadena was the next stop for the Hollywood Knights as they balled against the Pasadena High School Bulldogs on Saturday, April 26, 2003. Josh Henderson, Robert Ri’chard, Kiko Ellsworth, Jesse Metcalfe, Thad Luckinbill, Michael Bergin, Wesley Jonathan, Cylk Cozart, Arlen Escarpeta, Keith Robinson, guests Josh Keaton, Jamie Elman, Alisa Reyes, Venessa Lengies, Jeff Licon and performers the Nade and Evolution were all in attendance for the game. As many have noticed, the HK lineup is expanding with American Dreams cast members, which made this night especially special for Knights players Arlen and Keith as American Dreams production crew came out to support them in the game.

“It makes things that much more fun!” exclaimed Arlen, “The cast is here. The crew is here. The executive producer is here.”

The night started off with the introduction of the PHS color guard as they marched in the American flag. Once the color guard stood at half court, it was time for the guys of Evolution to display their talents as they beautifully sang the National Anthem in four-part harmony. Once the guys stepped off the court, the game began with the starting line up consisting with Wesley, Cylk, Michael, Robert, and Thad. Seconds after the game started, Cylk fell hard on the floor after being double teamed by the Bulldog faculty. Luckily, he was okay and the Knights executed some excellent passing to get them on the scoreboard. While the Knight’s took it to the boards, Driver Dave was on the sidelines hyping up the crowd with free shirts and cd’s.

After the first quarter, the PHS cheerleading squad took the court and preformed a short dance number. Apparently the Knights were still in a dancing mood in the second quarter, because Robert was dancing at the other end of the court to Sean Paul’s “Get Busy” while Cylk was shooting his two free throws. More prizes were made available to the fans if they were an avid Power 106 listener. Driver Dave was looking for the first person to know the whole crew of Big Boy’s neighborhood (including the DJ), and the DJ that took the airwaves after Big Boy and the Goodfellas. The lucky fan that knew these answers were given a cd.

Half time came and the Nade was first to floor. Anthony, JR and the rest of the Harrell brothers preformed a song off their sophomore album along with a dance performance to 50 Cent’s “In Da Club.” Their set was ended with a slam dunk made by Anthony (with assistance courtesy of JR) while the crowd chanted “Go Nade!” Next up, Evolution with “If I Ever Fall In Love” and “Party.” Cheerleaders swooned over these guys as they took the girls by their hands and belted out their tunes.

While the performances were going on, this gave Derek Jones, Assistant Varsity Basketball coach to reflect on the game and the Knights. “I think they are going to loose,” Jones stated, “They’re pretty fast. They’re real fast, real scrappy...it’s going to be an interesting game.”

While the Bulldogs saw a victory in their future, Michael said, “Let me look up at the scoreboard real quick…ok so we’re loosing by 8 points, it’s not going so well for us. We were up by like 15 points at one time, but we lost our momentum. We’ll come back and we’re going to win!”

Third quarter began, and off in the distance Kiko sat in the stands cooling off with a fan’s fan while Evolution was chatting with the crowd. Vanessa and company danced around to DMX’s “X Gonna Give It To Ya,” while the staff of American Dreams went crazy when Arlen made a three-pointer from the corner of the court. More cds and lanyard key chains were given away to hype up the fans. More dancing on the sidelines was present while Evolution caught the attention of many while they grooved to Talib Kweli’s “Get By” and the PHS cheerleaders shook it to Missy Elliot’s “Gossip Folks.” Throughout the dancing, Vanessa returned to her seat with HK memorabilia. Unfortunately, the game was over and the Knight’s lost another game 81-72.

Even though the Knights lost, executive producer of American Dreams, Jonathan Prince, was impressed by Arlen and Keith’s performance. “I think...wow...Arlen and Keith played the best game they could. I’ve never seen a faculty that looked this young, so I’m suspicious if we’re playing against students or teachers. So I think the HK played the best job they could against the teachers and I was wondering what the two students were doing playing for Pasadena – who kicked our butts.”

Back in the afterparty, those who participated in the event munched on food courtesy of Chipotle. Fans and Knights casts formed a circle and danced to 50 Cent’s “In Da Club.” The boys of The Nade popped locked and swiveled their hips while Michael Mirisch decided to do the Carlton Dance. The night ended, and it was time for the nights to board the bus and wait for the next game on Wednesday.

One on One

With everyone here, does that put pressure on you to perform better?
Arlen:
Oh no. (laughs) I’ve been just been talking a lot of trash so they’re expecting a lot from me.

This being your first game, what do you think of the HK?
Jamie:
I love these guys! I am here to support Arlen and Keith from American Dreams. They’re playing great, they’re in really good shape, and I’m just here to support the team.

What do you think of the organization coming out to help the schools?
Jamie:
I think it’s a great cause. I wish they did something like this for my high school. Raising money so they can spend it, and hopefully have fun with it...have it go to charity...whatever you want.

Can we expect you at any future games?
Jamie:
Yea! For sure I’ll be out. Whenever the boys are out, I’ll be sure to try to come out.

The HK lineup has been filled with AD cast members. So when can the girls expect Will Estes to join the Knights?
Michael Mirisch:
I know everyone wants Will Estes, you’re going to have to just keep checking the website.
