GARDEN GROVE HIGH SCHOOL - May 7, 2003

By Sue Kim

Wednesday night’s game at Garden Grove high School was one game closer to the end of the ’02-’03 season. But that doesn’t mean tonight’s game was any less exciting than usual. Tonight’s game benefited Grad Nite 2003 and with the strong turnout, I’m sure the end result wasn’t disappointing. What also wasn’t disappointing was tonight’s roster of Hollywood Knights. New to the team is Paul Malbry who is one of the featured stars in the new spring break movie “The Real Cancun.” It was a special night for Evolution as they got the chance to perform in their hometown. Jillian started the game with her acapella version of the National Anthem.

The Knights took a group huddle before Kiko, Thad, Cylk, Dejai, and Romeo took the court. Romeo went to give the fans in the stand in some hugs and quick pictures before he got ready for the tip off. Kiko went up against Argonauts faculty member for the jump ball. The faculty got the ball following the tip off but it was the Knights who were first to put points on the board. Kiko got fouled while going in got a two point shot and that sent him to the free throw line. Out of his two free throws, he made both shots, making the first shots of the game. Later Thad threw the ball into play to Romeo who sent the ball to Cylk and then back to Thad who attempted a two point shot that went out of bounds rather than in the basket. Kiko tried something new and decided to sit on a fan’s lap as he throws the ball into to Dejai. Soon after, Kiko made a two point shot with an assist from Romeo. Paul Malbry got his chance to play in this quarter, and although he is new to the Knights, he sure isn’t new to the game. He wasted no time making a two point shot after being rotated in the middle of the first quarter. The Knights were up a significant amount of points by the end of the first with a score of 9-26.

With such a lead at the end of the first quarter, the Knights fought to keep that up. This quarter, the fans couldn’t complain about the lack of attention. The Knights seemed to be spending more time paying attention to them than the game… But it was okay because no one was complaining. At the beginning of the quarter, Josh threw the ball into an awaiting fan on the court who dribbled down the court a bit before passing the ball back to Josh. Stoney helped out the Knights this quarter as he passed the ball to Eric after a pass from Josh. After stealing a hat from an unsuspecting fan in the stands, Stoney refereed with the hat on before Josh stole it from him to play the game in. Paul was in the stands with fans who couldn’t wait until half time to get their autographs and pictures while Josh made one of his two free throws after a foul was called. All the quality time gave a chance for the faculty to catch up to the Knights. By the end of the second, the Argonaut faculty was only ten points behind the Knights with another half of the game to go.

Tonight’s halftime brought out Jillian and Evolution to perform. Then it was Michael Mirisch who waved the crowd to the autograph tables. Fans ran and rushed to get their chance for pictures and autographs. Before the start of the third quarter, a lucky raffle winner got the chance to try and make a half court shot for two tickets to the post game party that night. Unfortunately they didn’t make it, which still left the chance for those ever-so-popular tickets to be won before the start of the fourth quarter. As the third quarter got underway, it was Kiko who had to be escorted away from the fans by security. Paul started the quarter off strong by consecutively making two two-point shots in a row. Before handing the ball over to the faculty to throw-in, Eric and Stoney took a time out from basketball to brush up on their volleyball skills as they volleyed the ball back and forth to each other. Romeo passed the ball to Thad who was in the key, and he proceeded to make two points. A time out was called late in the quarter and afterwards, Cylk, Romeo, and Kiko tried their best to distract a female faculty member as they danced around. The same faculty member was sent to the free throw line for a foul called on her and it was Cylk who tried to distract her again with his dancing. His efforts to distract were unfruitful as she made one of the two. The Argonauts had inched their way up to the Knights by the end of the third, trailing with only three points- 53-60.

Thad, Romeo, Dejai, Cylk, and Kiko started off the last quarter of tonight’s game. Cylk made one of his famous three point shots very early in the quarter along with Thad making a two point shot after an assist from Romeo soon after. Later in the period, Josh tried to make a shot from under the basket and missed but did gain two free throws. At the line he made one of his two, distancing the Knights’ score from the Argonauts’. After there was pass to Paul that came from down court, he made a two pointer just as the buzzer rang, leaving another victory for the Knights, 65-68.
