CHARTER OAK HIGH SCHOOL / ROYAL OAK INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL - May 3, 2003

By Sue Kim

After a win against the Schurr High School Spartans faculty the past Wednesday, the Knights hoped to keep that winning spirit alive as they played at Charter Oak Intermediate School on Saturday. To show the Knights their support, Vanessa Lengies, Sarah Ramos, and company hosted as the Hollywood Knights cheerleaders. They definitely got the crowd hyped up for the game with their cheers and dances; so much that Kiko tried out his hand out at cheerleading with them on his downtime during the game. The Knights started out strong in the first quarter and barely gave the faculty a chance to catch up. Kiko was sent to the line three times within a matter of seconds in the first period, a consequence of being fouled. Romeo went for a two point shot that ended up too long. Trevor did his best to save the ball from going out of bounds but his effort failed giving the ball to the faculty. Dejai scored a two point shot for the Knights and Arlen soon followed with the same. By the end of the first, the Knights were up significantly with a score of 17-31.

Kiko, Arlen, Trevor, Romeo, and Dejai were in for the beginning of the second quarter. The faculty had possession of the ball first but not long before Arlen stole the ball and passed to Trevor who then scored a two point shot. Trevor was fouled early in the quarter and that sent him to the line. Out of two free throws Trevor made both putting the score at 17-37, Knights. Josh, Wesley, Anthony, and Cylk were rotated in the middle of the quarter to relieve their teammates for a little while. There was a pass from Josh to Cylk and then back to Josh as he moved into the key but he was fouled as soon as the pass got to him. After a faculty member made 2 attempts to make a two point shot, Cylk blocked his shot, sending the ball to Wesley who then made two points. The faculty had the ball after a time out and tried numerous times to get the ball in the basket but failed. Soon after Anthony had the ball and made a clean three point shot. At the end of the second, Dejai was the last to put points on the board and left the score at 36-52 at the buzzer ending the quarter.

Performances from The Nade and Jillian consisted of tonight’s half time entertainment as well as the ever so popular autograph signing. But it wasn’t long before the start of the second half of the game. Josh threw the ball into play to an awaiting fan that then passed the ball to Anthony. Cylk made the first to attempt to put points on the board this period with a three point shot but unfortunately missed. After Anthony lost the ball after a steal from the faculty, Wesley was on the floor trying to get the ball back. After a faculty time out, a pass from Cylk to Arlen ended up out of bounds. Kiko, Romeo, Cylk all scored two and three point shots for the Knights in this quarter before the period ended with the score at 60-75.

The Knights started out strong in the fourth quarter, not wanting to lose the strong lead they already had. Arlen made two three point shots at the start of the period while Josh and Trevor scored two point shots. Trevor tried to block a faculty member with the ball, which ended with the faculty member on the floor. As Romeo went in for two, he was fouled and sent to the line where he made one of his two free throws. The faculty struggled to make a shot near their basket and it was Arlen that finally got the ball back for the Knights. But the faculty certainly did a good job of keeping up points wise. Within just the fourth quarter, they had scored 21 points. As hard as they tried, the Knights’ winning spirit was still alive as they won tonight’s game with a score of 81-96.
