ALTA LOMA HIGH SCHOOL - March 22, 2003

By Sue Kim

Tonight’s proceeds benefiting the associated student body of Alta Loma as the Knights played the San Bernardino’s Sheriff’s Department rather than the faculty they usually play. Hopefully the two new players to the team, Erik-Michael Estrada from O-Town and Justin Hartley from Passions, would help the Knights secure a victory. Plus Trevor Penick, adorned in his Alma Mater high school basketball uniform, was playing at his rival. Fans and Knights alike welcomed back Soluna as they sang tonight’s National Anthem.

Cylk, Thad, Trevor, and Romeo were on the court with the start of the quarter, concentrating on gaining control of the ball as Kiko was at center court for the tip off. The ball ended up in Thad’s hands but within just a few seconds, a violation was called that gave possession to the Sheriffs. Officer number 21 was the first to make a shot in tonight’s game with a two point shot. Trevor soon came back for the Knights by making a three point shot. Kiko rushed to save the ball from going out of bounds, which ended up with Romeo for the Knights. Sheriff number 5 missed a lay up, which gave Kiko the perfect opportunity to make a three pointer for the Knights with some assistance from Trevor. Arlen, Bryan, Dejai, and Cylk are just a few of the Knights that helped put the score at 11-38, Knights, at the end of first quarter.

With more than half of the game left to play, it was no team’s game. At the start of the second quarter, Josh Keaton and Jeff Licon’s arrivals were announced before the Knights went at it again to keep their lead on the scoreboard. Romeo, Thad, Kiko, Cylk, and Trevor were the starting five for this quarter with the Sheriffs having possession of the ball. Trevor went in for a two point shot in which he missed but Cylk made up for that as he made that missed two pointer soon after. Kiko rushed down the key and attempted to make a slam-dunk but his effort was unsuccessful and instead went to the free throw line for fouls he incurred in the process. Arlen dribbled the ball down court and tripped in the process but Justin grabbed the ball for the Knights while making a two point shot. Eric made a final attempt to up the Knights’ already leading score before half time but his attempt fell short. The Knights still had a substantial lead going into half time with a score of 26-57.

With the start of the third quarter, a fan got the chance to throw in the ball for the Knights. As Sheriff number 5 went in for a shot, Trevor ended up on the gym floor. Later, both Thad and Trevor were on the floor as they tried to get the ball that was once in Sheriff number 20’s possession. Arlen had the Knights’ score at an even 70 after his two point shot. In the few seconds Trevor was given the honors to give away a skateboard all attention was on him rather than the game as fans yelled their loudest to get his attention. Dejai passed the ball to Eric but that try ended up out of bounds. This time it was Bryan that tried to make the shot at the buzzer leaving the score at 41-74.

In the fourth quarter, the Knights tried to help the Sheriffs catch up. Kiko was at the line to for his free throws due to a foul but this time he tried to make them backwards (he didn’t make either shot). Later Erik was at the free throw line making his shot with his eyes closed, which ended up working. As the other Knights played the last of the game against the Sheriffs, Trevor and Kiko let the refs take a breather as they assumed referee responsibilities. Trevor took on his role as ref for the last few seconds of the game by calling a traveling violation on the Knights. Before the clock winded down to zero, Stoney got off from the bench to try and make a shot but missed. The game came to an end with a win for the Knights, 97-101.

Saturday, March 22, 2003 was a homecoming game for Trevor Penick as he and the rest of the Hollywood Knights faced off against the San Bernadino Sheriffs department and the Alta Loma High faculty. If you looked into the stands, you could spot Trevor’s mom holding up a sign that read “holla” on one side and “Let Trevor play” on the other. First timer Justin Hartley, Erik Michael Estrada, Kiko Ellsworth, the Goodfellas, Arlen Escarpeta, Thad Luckinbill, Bryan Datillo, Cylk Cozart, Khleo Thomas, Sarah Ramos, Josh Keaton, Jeff Licon, and Vanessa Lengies were all in attendance for the game. While the lineup for the Knights was being introduced, “boo’s” came from the crowd when Trevor revealed his high school jersey from Rancho Cucamunga High School, which happens to be rival schools with Alta Loma. Some may have noticed during warm-ups, Trevor was sporting his own Knights jersey. If fans remember, Trevor said in the Burbank game “I’m really going to try to make it to Alta Loma, because I went to Rancho, and they were my rival high school. If I could play in that gym, I will go to like 50.” So with the jersey that read 5+3, is Trevor an official Knight?

“Oh yeah definitely! I’m golden for the Hollywood Knights,” answered Trevor, “I’m in it for ever second of it.”

After Soluna sung the National Anthem, the game was on its way, with the Knights taking a stead lead over the Braves and the Sheriffs department. The Power DJ’s hyped up the crowd by giving away various prizes which included passes to Chris Rock’s new movie “Head of State.” Like in the Burbank game, Trevor continued to ham it up for the crowd by sitting on a fan’s lap when he tried to save the ball from going out of bounds.

Half time came and the girls of Soluna were asked to sing one more time in honor for the current war in Iraq. Soluna sang a beautiful patriotic acapella medley of songs which consisted of “Oh Beautiful,” “My Country Tis of Thee,” “Glory,” “God Bless America,” and “America.”

“We actually arranged this medley after September 11th,” revealed Jessica (of Soluna), “and we wanted to do something because we were at a stand still. We couldn’t do anything, we were actually supposed to release our album in November, but we couldn’t because of September 11th. So we’ve been doing a few events, but now that we are at war, and everything that is going on, we still have to maintain our patriotism and support the country.”

Following their performance was the autograph sessions where fans scrambled to take pictures and young kids were on the court playing some ball with the faculty. After the hysteria, Jillian, accompanied by her dancers, took the court and sang “722” and “Heartbreaker.” Finally it was back to the game, but not without one male fan trying to cover Trevor up with an Alta Loma letterman’s jacket.

Mike Shaw, deputy sheriff, gave his insights on tonight’s event, “I think it’s a good event. It brings the community close together. There are a lot of people out here, a lot of kids, and that’s the most important thing – getting the kids out here.”

As many fans know, the Knights usually play against the school faculty, but tonight’s game was different because the Knights played against the sheriff’s department. Horace Boatwright, deputy sheriff, revealed how the sheriff’s department got involved, “We have a promoter for our federation, and he knows the promoter for the Hollywood Knights. So we got together to do a charity game for the kids.”

While the game continued, fans and kids continuously danced to music like Benzino’s “Rock the Party,” and even caught the attention of Trevor when he decided to dance with the little girls to Faith Evans “Burnin’ Up.”

The Knights took a commanding lead over the opponents come fourth quarter. This allowed Kiko to shoot his free throws backwards and Senior, Junior Denson, to shoot a three pointer for the Knights. With a blink of an eye, the referee’s joined the faculty side allowing Kiko and Trevor to regulate on the game. With twelve players on the court, the game got really interesting. Erik shot his free throws with his eyes closed; Kiko was wearing his ref outfit backwards; Romeo was hanging out with the fans in the stands hoping to get a shirt from the Power DJ’s, and one ref did a slam dunk while Kiko was calling fouls on Stoney Jackson. The game ended 97-101 in the Knights favor.

One on One

What have you girls been doing since your album and single came out?
Soluna (Jessica):
We were on two tours. We opened up for Enrique Iglesias’ tour and Mark Anthony’s tour. Now we are working on a TV series pilot for UPN and we are hoping that it will turn into a series. It’s a show about our life story.

Can the fans look forward to a follow up album?
Soluna (Aurora):
Yeah! We are working on that one right now.

Will you be performing any of your new material at an of the future HK games?
Soluna (T):
Probably yeah. We love doing any charity event with the HK, and we support them. I know they will be having some games in May, so hopefully we will be able to perform a couple of our songs.

What is it like to interact with all these kids?
Soluna (America):
It’s amazing and it’s great to know we can come out here and help raise money for the schools and for the kids. It’s well worth it.
Soluna (Jessica): It’s cool because actually T is from out here.
Soluna (T): I went to Chaffey and I graduated in ‘99.

So what is it like to come out here to your hometown area?
Soluna (T):
I love it. A while back I was like “We should perform at my school because a lot of my friends are there.” So we went to Chaffey and performed a few songs, and it’s so hard because a lot of stuff that we do is out in L.A. So to come out here and do something special out here because my family lives here, it makes things so much cooler.

Could you describe your role in the new Even Stevens movie?
Josh Keaton:
I can’t say a whole lot about it, because I don’t want to give away too much of the story. I will be playing Ren’s love interest.

Can you at least give away a little bit of the plot?
Josh:
Yeah. They go on a vacation on a reality TV show.

What have you been doing since filming the movie?
Josh:
I have been working on a solo project. No news on it right now, but it’s being very close on getting finished.

On the show you have to imitate the dance moves from the past on American Bandstand. So is there any choreography that you have to learn prior to filming?
Venessa Lengies:
Every single American Dreams episode that has bandstand in it, the choreographer comes in and helps Brittany Snow (Meg Pryor) and I learn the dances. As easy as it may seem they are really difficult especially if you are so used to modern dancing. They don’t want to see us bump and grind and nothing like that, so the choreographer comes in and teaches us the new moves. They are so silly, you know, we feel so retarded doing it, but that’s what they used to do. As far as the performers that come in, their stuff is always choreographed.

This being your first game, what do you think of it?
Vanessa:
It is my first game! The energy is crazy, like when they were giving away that skateboard; my ear dreams were going to burst with the amount of girls here. I’m here to support Arlen, and I was behind him during the autograph signing and there are pictures of him with his shirt off, and the table was being pushed towards us. It was crazy and I will probably come again because it’s contagious energy. I like it a lot.

What has been your favorite act that has been imitated on Bandstand?
Vanessa:
B2K was just there yesterday. They portrayed The Temptations, and they sang “My Girl.” They were so cute and just so adorable. It’s funny because they reminded me of – have you seen Dumbo? You know the crows that joke around, they reminded me of them, and they were so cute.

Is it weird to have people recognize you as Patty on American Dreams?
Sarah Ramos:
It’s not really weird, but it’s really cool.

What is it like to come out here and watch Arlen play?
Sarah:
It is so much fun. I think he’s really good, but then again I don’t know because I never played basketball.

What was it like playing your first game?
Justin Hartley:
It’s exhausting. I haven’t worked out like that in a really long time, and I couldn’t find the basket. But other than that I think I did all right. I found my uniform, and I found the floor, but I couldn’t find the basket. That’s ok, I’ll get better.

What was it like playing in your rival gym?
Trevor Penick:
It was absolutely awesome, I got to say. Being in the gym seriously brought back memories. Not only was this my rival high school, but also I played city league basketball when I was 10, 11, 12. So I played basketball in that gym every Saturday, so just the smell of that gym brought all those memories back. It was really special, all my family and friends were here. It was cool.

Why does your jersey read 5+3?
Trevor:
Because 8 was already taken, and 8 is Kobe Bryant and Kobe Bryant is my favorite player that walked to face of the planet. So I had to improvise and get 8 somehow, so 5+3 =8.
