ORANGE HIGH SCHOOL - November 16, 2002

By Jeanne Flores

The Saturday, November 16, 2002 game in Orange High School was a special night for one of the Hollywood Knight staff members. Fans may have noticed that the Hollywood Knights coach, Andre Smith, was playing for the Panthers along with Knights referee, Stoney Jackson. “I coach and teach here,” reveals Coach Smith, “and Stoney is just a good friend of mine.”

Student organizers for the event, Justin Ramirez, Junior, Patrick Sanders, Senior, and Lawrence Lu, Senior, also gave their thoughts about the Hollywood Knights coming to help out their school.

“I think that it’s so cool that they are doing this. They come out here and help us, because we need the help definitely. So it’s cool,” commented Ramirez.

Sanders added, “It gives us a chance to see those on TV and see what they really are. They’re cool.”

“I think it’s cool for the Hollywood Knights to come out and support our school,” said Lu, “They are helping us raise money for basketball.”

Cylk Cozart, Sammy Lopez, Jesse Metcalfe, David Nicoll, Kiko Ellsworth, Josh Henderson, Wesley Jonathan, Kevontay and D-Smoove of 3rd Storee, DeJai Jeffries, Romeo, and guests Jeff Licon (Brothers Garcia), Ashlee Simpson (7th Heaven), Laurie Gidosh (Scene 23 fame), Mischa Mandel and Alexis Lopez (Movie Surfers) were all in attendance to help raise money for the Panther’s boys basketball team and the rest of the sports program.

David Nicoll sang the National Anthem and the game kicked off with Kiko, Cylk, Jesse, Sammy and Wesley tipping off against Coach Dave, assistant boys basketball coach, and the rest of the Panther faculty.

Driver Charles and DJ Speed continued to hype up the crowd with Power 106 t-shirts, license plate covers, and shoes. What was this night’s stipulation to earn the shoes? Fans had to prove that they had the “ghetto-oldest pair of shoes.” Ron T. and the rest of the Power 106 DJ’ blazed “Gangsta Lovin’” by Eve and Alicia Keys and Christina Aguilera’s “Dirrty” while the Knights and the Panthers dribbled back and fourth on the court.

Kiko had his turn to excite the crowd when he shot his free throws without his jersey, while Kevontay and Romeo ‘worked it’ to Missy Elliot’s hot track. Five minutes into the second quarter, the female colleagues went into the game. Coach Anderson attempted to make another basket when she was fouled by D-Smoove. At the end of the first half, the score was 38-50, Hollywood Knights were in the lead.

The OHS Dance team was first to perform on the court as they showed off their moves to Michael and Janet Jackson’s “Scream.” Josh, Ashley, and Laurie danced on the sidelines. Next up were the OHS cheerleaders. They performed their routine to the Beach Boys’ “Surfing USA.” Finally, a new female pop group, Sweet Obsession, showed off their stuff and stole the hearts of many guys as they preformed “Summin’ Summin’” and “Miss Me, Kiss Me.”

“The group was formed when an acting group decided to form a group. A few more girls joined in and they formed Sweet Obsession - what we are today,” revealed Jillian, 18. The girls signed on with the Hollywood Knights when they were asked to join after performing at a showcase. They are currently working on their mini album to be released later in the year.
The second half was on its way with Cylk, Kiko, Josh, Jesse, and Dejai at the line up. Power 106 continued to give away items including a skateboard, which Christian Rodriguez, Freshman, was lucky enough to win because he was a skater. The final score was 55-70. The Hollywood Knights were victorious over Coach Smith, Stoney and the rest of the Panther faculty.

The after party was held in the cafeteria were Kevontay asked “Who’s mamma made this chicken, because this is some good chicken!” The Knights also got to chow down on pizza, salad, cake and cookies.

Coach Smith made a nice speech and thanked the Knights for coming out to help his school.

“I want to thank these guys for giving their time to help out the school. I appreciate that and sometimes we don’t thank them enough for that. I want to also thank Power 106 for coming out because they did a luncheon the other day,” said Smith.

Smith also revealed what it was like to play against a team he coaches, “They’re athletes just like we are. It’s just that we are in awe about them being celebrities.”

Quote of the Knight: "Did your mamma make this chicken?" - Kevontay of 3rd Storee (just before Coach Smith was about to give his thanks)

One on One with the Knights

Me: Are you officially part of the Hollywood Knights or just here to support Josh?
Laurie Gidosh: I’m here to support Josh

Me: What have you been up to since Scene 23?
L: Writing and recording a solo cd. It’s an R&B cd.

Me: When can fans expect the release of this album?
L: We are working to get the demo out at the end of this month and hopefully the album will be released within the next year.

Me: How do you respond to people when they call you by your character name?
Jesse Metcalfe: I’m used to it. I’ll just respond.

Me: How did you come about the stage name Remedy?
David Nicoll: I was driving one day in my car and I was thinking up a name for a song. Something about what I could call a girl, and remedy was something a girl could be for a guy. But at the same time I was looking for a stage name to set me apart from what I’ve done in the past as David Nicoll, so I took it.

Me: Being involved with music, what do you guys (The Goodfellas) think about the performers that are a part of the Hollywood Knights like 3rd Storee, David Nicoll, and Sweet Obsession?
Romeo: David Nicoll is a star in the making; he’s very talented, he can write. 3rd Storee, they are going to get their big break as long as they stay in the game. Sweet Obsession, I definitely see a lot of potential there.
DeJai: A lot of the artists that are with the Hollywood Knights are a lot upcoming artists. So it’s good that we get our hands on them first, so when people see them, they kind of remember they were with us and that’s how that relationship works.

Me: Because you guys are like faceless celebrities because you are on the radio...what is it like to come out here and interact with the fans?
D: It’s actually real cool because that gives us a chance meet the people that really like us. If we’re really cool, they’re like “wow” and they really like you, and they discover that this is me.

Me: What type of accommodations do the Goodfellas have to make in order to make it to the games after your set with Power 106?
R: Thank God our boss will let us leave early sometimes so we can get to the games on time, because it’s important for us to come out here and share our love with the people that listen to us.
