GLENDALE HIGH SCHOOL - December 14, 2002

By Jeanne Flores

Saturday, December 14, 2002 marked the last game in 2002 for the Hollywood Knights. Alfonso Ribiero, Arlen Escarpeta, Cylk Cozart, the Goodfellas, Dion Basco, Jesse Metcalfe, Josh Henderson, Kiko Ellsworth, Mike Mizanin, and newcomer Shedrack Anderson III suited up for the court as they faced off against the Glendale Police Association and the Glendale High School Nitro’s Faculty. The game was to help raise money for the Glendale High School Associated Student Body. Guests Lena Cardwell, Chrystee Phariss, A.J. Trauth, Melissa Schuman, and Jeff Licon watched on from the stands while new recording artist Joanna sang the National Anthem to open up the game.

The Nitro’s were the first to score, but Alfonso responded with a jump shot of his own. While another Nitro foiled Alfonso’s attempt at a lay up, Chrystee went around the stands talking with fans and signing autographs. The second quarter started off with a fan in bounding the ball for the Knights. Ron T and Joey Nicks kept the crowd excited by giving away Snoop Dogg shirts and Power 106 sweatshirts. Some fans may have noticed an unannounced David Nicoll was there as he sang to J.C. Chasez’s “Blowin Me Up (with her love).” While David sang the chorus, Ron T and Kiko took an extra mic and attempted to sing along. As the first half winded down, Seth Hall and his friends encouraged their side of the stands to do the wave.

Halftime consisted of performances from At Last and newcomer CJ, followed by the autograph signing. The guys of At Last announced good news; they will be opening up for acts like Avril Lavigne and Justin Timberlake at this year’s KIIS FM Jingle Ball at the Arrowhead Pond. A.J. helped students bring out tables for the autograph signing, David hyped up the crowd before CJ’s performance by giving away CJ shirts and ushered people to get off the courts to watch the show. CJ wowed the crowd with his rendition of the Jackson 5’s “Dancing Machine,” and some fans may have noticed that David posed as one of CJ’s back up dancers. After both performances, the autograph session caused fans to flood the tables.

The second half of the game kicked off with a special appearance by the “Queen of Hollywood Knights” (as said by Romeo) Vicky Mirisch, who’s been absent from the games taking care of her new baby, Princess Chloe. All of the Knights welcomed her with open arms, and the Goodfellas commentated for a while. While Ron T and Joey Nicks were giving away free stuff, one fan got the attention of Ron T because she wanted to rap. However, all she ended up saying was “Yo, yo, yo. Josh, I love you! Where are you?” Josh was found on the sidelines, teasing fans by giving away his almost eaten lollipop. The fourth quarter had the Knights struggling to maintain a steady lead over the Nitros, Michael Mirisch dancing to Justin Timberlake’s “Like I Love You,” and Josh dancing at mid court with Kiko at the free throw line.

“Guys, get a room,” said Joey Nicks jokingly as Kiko dog-piled on Michael at the sidelines.

Fans reached out for the DJ’s, excited to snag movie passes for Disney’s ‘The Lion King’ at the Bridge in Santa Monica. Eddie Karibyan tied the score up at 89 a piece with 3 minutes left in the quarter causing the Nitros to double team the Knights in hopes to keep the lead.

“Can you smell it? It smells like a victory” announced Ron T and Joey Nicks while Romeo made a three point shot from downtown as the Knights won 102-94.

The Knights chowed down on an Italian meal in the Glendale High cafeteria after the game. The food was delicious! Fans tried to get Josh’s attention through the windows by holding up a sign that said “Josh can we take you home?!”. While Josh was hamming it up for the excited fans at the other side of the windows, I got to talk with several of the Knights.

One on One with the Knights

Me: What are you thoughts about opening up for Jingle Ball?
JP (At Last): Rick Dees suggested that we’d be part of Jingle Ball in our interview, and we went crazy because it wasn’t expected. We were just going to come in, say “what’s up” to Rick Dees, and him doing that was really, really cool.

M: How the preparation for this concert going to be different from preparing for the half time performances?
JP: Honestly, it’s the same thing. Small show, big show, it’s the same. We just go out there and do our best.

M: As a newcomer to the group, how did you sign on with the Hollywood Knights?
Shedrack Anderson: A few buddies of mine, basically told me “Man, you got to come to this thing, it’s hot. It’s going to be fun, you play basketball right?” I told them “Yea, I play a little bit” and that’s how I found out, and from there all they had to do was call.

M: What was it like to come out there and play ball?
S: It was a lot of fun. I had a wonderful experience, but… I had to be honest… I was surprised, all these guys could play. I was tired by the end of the game.

M: Do you ever get tired of the fanatic atmosphere?
Josh Henderson: It’s a lot of fun, and I appreciate all of them.

M: There is a saying “A team can easily loose a game if they miss the easy shots like free throws and lay-ups.” In tonight’s game, there were several misses like those, could you comment on that.
Cylk Cozart: I think it’s a level of concentration is the key. Because when some guys have an easy shot, like a lay-up, it’s so easy, they don’t even think and put it up there. And then, the next thing you know, the game is tied, and then it’s behind, and you’re not thinking about the shot you missed because you’re in the moment. That’s what I like about basketball, it’s kind of like life…you’re in the moment, and you stay in the moment.

M: Did you feel intimidated knowing that some of your opponents came from the Police Association?
Mike Mizanin: Are you kidding me? (the Miz voice) “I’m the Miz. The Miz isn’t going to get intimidated by a couple of police officers! Are you kidding girl?”

M: Why have you been coaching the past couple games instead of Coach Smith?
Michael Mirisch: Because Coach Smith and Coach Williams are with the Orange High basketball team and they have games during this part of the season. So I sub in, and I’ve coached several years.

M: Towards the end of the fourth quarter, the defense decided to double-team your men? What instructions did you give the Knights to get around that?
MM: I decided to have them play a passing game at that point. Move the ball out of the area that they were trying to guard and find an open man and take the shot.

Quote of the Knight: "Jesse’s hot, but now they said Josh is hot. Now Josh is hot, wait...Jesse’s really hot." - Ron T (Power 106)

Saturday night’s game was hosted by Glendale High School as the Hollywood Knights went up against the Glendale High School faculty members and the Glendale Police Association. The police association gave a helping hand as they shot, dribbled, and scored against the Knights. Hollywood Knights is always the one to bring you the latest and newest stars and tonight was no exception. For instance take A&M Records artist Joanna who sung the National Anthem or solo recording artist CJ that performed at tonight’s half time who just also recently opened for JC Chasez from the group you might be familiar with, ‘N Sync. And I can’t forget to mention A.J. Trauth from Disney’s “Even Stevens” and Melissa Schuman, former member of Bad Boy Records’ ‘Dream’, and Shedrack Anderson III, who were at their first game of the season. Call me a namedropper if you must, but everyone gets so excited when they see and hear of the new celebs that show up week after week!

But now it’s time for the real scoop… what happened at tonight’s game. While Cylk was getting ready for the jump ball, Alfonso, Kiko, Jesse, and DeJai were on the court for the Knights. Glendale was the first to score in the game but Alfonso came right back for the Knights and scored a two pointer. In the middle of the first quarter, Arlen arrived with gear in hand just as Shedrack Anderson stole the ball from a Glendale faculty member. By the end of the first quarter, the Knights were barely leading with a score of 21-23.

Going into the second quarter, Jesse was first to score for the Knights with nothing less than a three point shot. While Arlen was going for a rebound, he was fouled and that sent him to the line. Later Jesse got the rebound and passed it to Arlen who made a two-point shot on behalf of the Knights. Romeo, Josh, DeJai, Shedrack, and Cylk were rotated in during the second. Dion made his entrance in the second quarter and with less than a minute left in the quarter, Glendale team members struggled to make a two point shot as various members went in for the shot and finally made it. Romeo scored last for the Knights in this quarter and the score was left at 43-52 when the buzzer sounded.

With the end of half time came the start of the third quarter. Kiko, Alfonso, Arlen, Dion, and Cylk were up first. At the beginning of the quarter, Dion passed to Cylk who then went for a three point shot but missed. Later, Cylk was fouled while trying to get a pass from Kiko. Glendale member went down court for two but Kiko blocked it. In the middle of the third, a time out was called to do a little strategizing. After the time out, The Miz, Josh, and Romeo all made points for the Knights and when the quarter ended, the score was 69-72.

The fourth quarter was much like the rest in the sense that the Knights led for the majority of the quarter. Dion took a fall while trying to get a pass but nothing that kept him away from the game. Arlen was fouled this quarter and made both his free throws. Once again it was Romeo that made the last shot of the quarter and of the game with a nice, clean three pointer to end the game at 94-102, Knights. Tonight was the last game of 2002; come help us start off the New Year at January 18’s game at Westlake High School!
